At Anzen Safety & Training, we deliver trusted, hands-on first aid and resuscitation training from our Nelson Bay and Tomago training centres, supporting individuals and workplaces across Port Stephens, Maitland, Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter Valley.

Commonly known as the Warden and Chief Warden Course, this training equips participants with the knowledge and leadership skills required to manage facility emergencies confidently and effectively. Participants learn how to command, control and coordinate emergency response procedures, ensure occupant safety, and liaise with emergency services in accordance with Australian Standards AS 3745 and AS 4083.

This course is ideal for members of a workplace Emergency Control Organisation (ECO), including Chief Wardens, Deputy Chief Wardens and Communications Officers, as well as anyone responsible for emergency preparedness or facility safety planning.

Training covers a wide range of emergency scenarios and teaches participants how to:

  • Apply WHS and OHS requirements in emergency contexts

  • Lead and support building occupants during an evacuation

  • Use communication systems and provide clear, calm instructions

  • Interpret emergency control indicator equipment, including fire indicator panels and building management systems

  • Assist emergency services, manage post-incident activities and contribute to facility emergency planning

By completing this nationally aligned training, participants develop the confidence to take decisive action in critical situations, ensuring the safety and coordination of all occupants during emergencies.

    • PUAFER005 - Operate as part of an emergency control organisation

    • PUAFER006 - Lead an emergency control organisation

  • This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

  • Refresher min. duration - N/A

    Blended min. duration - N/A

    Face-to-face min. duration - 360 minutes

    Online with face-to-face min. duration - 45 minutes

  • Participants must be able to complete the practical demonstrations for the course, including wearing suitable identification, assisting occupants, using communications systems, commanding, controlling and coordination of facility emergency response procedures.

    Pre-course study: Students may be required to undertake online pre-course work prior to attending the face to face session depending on the course delivery mode.

    Online study: Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online/ pre-course studies.

  • Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

  • The units have the following recommended renewal periods:

    PUAFER005 - Operate as part of an emergency control organisation - Not applicable

    PUAFER006 - Lead an emergency control organisation - Not applicable

  • Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include: 

    Performance tasks:

    • Undertake pre-emergency planning

    • Prepare and plan for an emergency

    • Operate as part of an ECO in a fire emergency

    • Lead an ECO in a fire emergency

    Documentation:

    • Emergency equipment fault log

    • Emergency evacuation incident and debrief form

    • Facility emergency plan (extract)

    Theory assessment:

    • A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions

  • Students are required to complete a self evaluation against the following core skills as part of the enrolment process. This will allow your trainer to understand any additional support that may be required during the course delivery and assessment.

    • Learning - I can take in new information and use it to make decisions in different situations.

    • Reading - I can read and understand everyday instructions, signs, and short documents.

    • Writing - I can write down clear, short notes or fill in simple forms when needed.

    • Oral Communication - I can speak clearly and calmly to explain things or give directions to others.

    • Numeracy - I can work out timing, order of steps, or simple numbers when following a process.
